What is the average rate of common law couples living together before they separate?

can't quite remember, but i read an article on a study that had done this on common law couples and from what i remember it said from 3-5 years together. can any of you give me the average year and provide a reason if you can =)

thanks!!What is the average rate of common law couples living together before they separate?
Your question is unclear. I am a SC attorney and SC has common law marriage but there is no time requirement in order to be common law married if that is what you were asking. Also, if a couple is common law married, they cannot just separate any more than a couple married through a ceremony could separate. There are 2 ways into marriage (common law or ceremony) but only 1 way out while both are alive (divorce through the court).

If you meant how long to unmarried people live together before they marry or go their separate ways, you should rephrase. Also, that figure would greatly depend on where you are talking about since different areas would have a different acceptance of unmarried people living together and thus it would go on longer there. In CA for example, there are even laws where an unmarried couple can split and one still be required to pay alimony (or palimony) while in SC, there are no such laws. If you are in a country different than the USA, it is probably very different there too. What is the average rate of common law couples living together before they separate?
People living together or their married counterparts living in a contractual marriage have the same problems so I would say more than 50% or so split up. I have no clue as to how long they stay together but I think it is no different than if you have a contract.
I don't know that statistics. but I cannot see it different than marriage - without the contract signed. Where I live the same laws apply to common law as married.
