Does domestic partner only apply for gay/lesbian couples or can a heterosexual couple be considered that?

What is the exact definition of a domestic partner? I get different answers in different places. Is it only applied for gay/lesbian couples or can a heterosexual couple that lives together, but isn't married be considered a domestic partnership?Does domestic partner only apply for gay/lesbian couples or can a heterosexual couple be considered that?
There is always something important to remember about words that they have denotative i.e. dictionary meanings and connotative i.e. implied meanings.

So that said Domestic Partner can apply to either heterosexual or gay/lesbian couples denotatively.

Connotatively its indicative of a homosexual couple when one refers to having a ';domestic partner';.

You know as C.S. Lewis once said we humans have a tendency of making words and their meanings useless when perfectly good words already exist to say what we wish to say.
