Now that Prop 8 was passed what is going to happen to gay couples that already married?

I am not gay, but I am an avid supporter of the right to be equal and marry whoever you want to marry. I read on a popular gossip blog that prop 8 was passed and gay marriage is now banded in California. While this is devastating news to me and friends of mine, I was wondering what will happen to those who already married when gay marriage was Legal? Now that Prop 8 was passed what is going to happen to gay couples that already married?
Prop. 8

This is going to be a hot bed issue for the next many, many years. I may not agree with all the principles of this bill, and I may agree with some, but I could never cast a vote that limits the rights of ANY minority group, regardless of whether or not I like them. I could never cast a vote that limits the civil rights of any man or woman, short of criminals. I believe that the United States took a major step backwards yesterday, back to the days of segregation based on creed and color. This is the first major step back we have taken since the 1950's and days of dogs and firehoses, sit-ins, and men like George Wallace blocking the education of young African Americans.

For the first time in my life I am almost ashamed to call myself an American, how we could let this bill pass is beyond my realm of comprehension. We had enough sense to elect the best canidate, while he was black, but not enough to protect the rights of minorities in this country. This is a slippery slope we have begun to climb that can only end in disaster until we right this wrong committed against humanity.

It doesn't matter whether or not you like gay people, or their lifestyles, but to say that one group/culture in America may not have the same rights as others is to say they are less than we are, and we have fought for 250 years to correct the incidences in our history where we have done this before, and now Americans are willing to do it in their own front yard, and stand against their neighbor and say, I am more deserving of happiness than you, and since your idea of happiness is different from mine, you may not have your happiness because I don't agree with it...

How could Americans take such a step back in the struggle for social equality...I hope the religious right that aided in the passing of this bill enjoys praying for humanity, because we all volunteered a piece of our goodness yesterday and it is gone until we can correct this horrible wrong against our brothers and sisters...

I for one, refuse to ';TEACH'; marriage as man and woman, I will teach love to all, not love for some, to be expressed in any way they see fit...

Signed,

1 Disturbed Teacher (educated, engaged, straight male)

Now that Prop 8 was passed what is going to happen to gay couples that already married?
Proposition 8 does not take away legal rights from anybody. Any two individuals in the state of California may enter into a domestic partnership, which, by statute, grants them all legal rights and responsibilities of married individuals (Family Code 297.5).

Contrary to the claims of the anti-prop 8 forces, marriage is not a right. Marriage is a responsibility and a legally-binding contract intended to stabilize families with children.

Numerous laws exist that restrict the ability of certain people to enter into a marriage contract. First, marriage is only allowed between adults, not minors. Second, marriage is only allowed between two individuals. Multiple partner marriages (polygamy and polyandry) are not legal. Third, marriage is not allowed between closely related individuals (brothers, sisters, and first cousins). If marriage is declared a fundamental right of all individuals, then all restrictions to marriage would be declared unconstitutional, opening the doors to polygamy, polyandry, incest, and child marriage.

Proposition 8 is not about rights, but is about protecting marriage and families against the destruction of traditional marriage through the actions of four activist judges. If the institution of marriage is declared a right for all individuals then any laws that restrict that right will be declared unconstitutional, requiring that polygamy, polyandry and incestuous marriage be made legal.

Oh yeah, Obama also doesn't support gay marriage...so quit crying.

Same sex marriages will no longer be valid or recognized in the state of California upon the passage of Proposition 8.

The title of Proposition 8 is that it ';Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry'; with the language ';Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.';

Since, if passed, the California Constitution would say that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California, same-sex couples who have been married would find that their marriage is no longer ';valid or recognized'; with that right being eliminated from California law.
They have a document that proves sometimes judges (9th district) have trouble recognizing their jobs as the constitution defines. One more time legislative, judicial, and executive are the three branches of our government. Judicial branch does NOT make the law. While I'm here let me say, the following. It doesn't matter how many ways you define bigotry, that was not the proposal. The concern of many was confirmed when children were taken out of school to attend a homosexual contract being performed. Also a short biology class, egg + sperm = baby. Egg + egg = omelet. The possibilities of what the gay community would do to our churches, and pastors was a huge concern of many of my friends. It would have taken little time before our pastors would have been harrassed, and or sued to perform marriages that are against what God defines as family.
Well, assuming that it did pass, probably nothing. Ex post facto laws are unconstitutional according to the U.S. Constitution.

In other words, for those who are already married, their marriages will remain intact and recognized by the State of California.

I honestly cannot believe that this may have actually passed. I don't live in California, but I am from Illinois and realize that the national implications of the measure are great; thankfully, my state doesn't allow referendums on such issues. Nonetheless, at least, I can still hope for civil unions as California will continue to recognize and administer these regardless of the vote on Prop. 8.
Well, the current governor of California is Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is publicly against Prop 8 and is also against any change to the state constitution. He has the power to veto Prop 8 and the chances are pretty high that he will do so. All it means is it will be delayed and be voted on again, but it's a lot better than just letting it pass.
They , as one of those lucky ones, continue to be married. They [government] have no rights to take that away from them . And since it was before the Prop was passed , It still counts.
There will be a fight to keep those marriages legal. Those who are already married might find their marriage licenses revoked. This is a sad day for human rights when we single out a group of people and deny them basic rights.
I'm not sure, I'm pretty sure they're using the ';grandfathered in'; rule. They'll still be married, lucky ducks. But again, I don't know for sure.
you just cant marry here
Im in the middle with this issue, Nobody should be denied their rights to happiness, but the whole institution of marraige refers to a bond between a man and woman. I find it kind of odd that gays, being people who have broken the trend of traditonal couples (man and woman) and gone on to do what they want now find it necessary to reinforce their commitment to each other with a super traditional thing such as marraige. I'm all for giving them the same benefits such as tax breaks and so forth, but I'm not sure if we should make it ok for gay couples to adopt kids, or to have teachers teach that marraige can be between a man and a man, woman and woman. Call that harsh, but I dont think that any child should have to grow up and go through school while having to explain to anyone why he has two daddys or two mommys.
I don't see how they can still have their marriage considered valid since CA doesn't recognize them.

I really don't care if they are ';married.'; I just don't like the gay agenda that comes with it. Sorry but 5 year old children were being taught in schools and that's wrong!
dont know but im happy it passed. No more man and man and woman and woman
