Why are homosexual couples not given equal rights in the US?

I know the answer, and it's disgusting actually. People honestly feel that a civil union = a marriage, so they (the opponents of gay marriage) feel that this is adequate.





There are many rights offered to married folks that people in a civil union do not get.





Example: In Florida, one gay man or one gay woman can adopt, but a Gay couple under the ';bonds'; of a civil union cannot.





Example: Even though each state has its own laws around marriage, if someone is married in one state and moves to another, their marriage is legally recognized. For example, Oregon marriage law applies to people 17 and over. In Washington state, the couple must be 18 to wed. However, Washington will recognize the marriage of two 17 year olds from Oregon who move there. This is not the case with Civil Unions. If someone has a Civil Union in Vermont, that union is not recognized in any other state. As a matter of fact, two states, Connecticut and Georgia, have ruled that they do not have to recognize civil unions performed in Vermont, because their states have no such legal category. As gay marriages become legal in other states, this status may change.





I am not a homosexual and am not in any way biased, but that is absurd. Marriage, no matter what it used to be, is defined in the 21st century social policy of today as simply the state recognized union between two non related, human beings in love.





There is literally nothing wrong with that statement; and for the close minded lot that feel this would slippery slope into apes marrying their borthers and so forth, come off it.





If we can have over 11,000 laws regarding guns and gun ownership, I'm sure we could logically handle two gay people getting married.

EDIT: People, wake up. Some really need to understand that the Bible, to some, is nothing more than a book. You need real, logical and verifiable proof if you are trying to dispel an argument using your point of view. Marriage equality is not legal in all 50 states because people keep being told that their churches will be forced to recognize it, and their children will be taught about it in school. Both of these have been proven time and time again to be false, but the religious right keeps perpetuating these lies because they work. They worked in California and Maine. Churches will not be forced to recognize or celebrate marriages they don't approve of. Even if they were, why would a gay couple want to be married there? If I were getting married, I would want to be married in a place and among people that love and accept me. As for the schools thing: I went kindergarten through twelfth grade in public schools, and didn't hear one word about marriage that I can recall. At least among my friends, that experience is the norm and not the exception.

personally i dont ONLY base my decisions on voting for or against gay marriage on religious beliefs. i have political beliefs too to back me up.

Homosexuality is like poison to society. Common sense says that men with men is not natural! If it's against God created principles, it can't be good. I do not believe homosexuals should be harmed but I also don't believe ENDA is constructive.
why not give equal right for sodomy...equal rights for under age marriages...or maybe equal rights to everything and this way everybody will be able to do what they want...the equal rights stuff is getting way out of hand...why do i have to wear this to school..i have rights...why can't i smoke some weed,i have rights...when will it end..myself i ready don't care what you do in privacy..but when you people start caressing and kissing in public...that is a big NO...i don't want kids to see it..
Because people can't put themselves in other people's shoes. How would they like it if they were told they couldn't marry who they wanted. ';Oh, no you can't marry them, they're the same gender as you';, ';Oh, you can't marry them, they're a different race then you';, ';Oh, no, they're a different religion then you';
i dont know but who the hell said it's not okay for someone to love the same gender? its the same thing, but differents sexes... so i dont see what the problem is. but whoever said that should be shot, because its not fair to homosexuals, who are discrimintated against for no reason

If you want to win the argument you have to start asking the right questions. Like: How is the government involving itself in a contract between two people when their role is only to enforce contracts?
Honey we still have judges who won't grant interracial marriages and women who make less than men for the same positions.





They are not given equal rights because we still have closed minded people in power.
